Bariatric Surgery is a relatively new surgical procedure that is helping thousands of obese people achieve their weight loss goals across the nation and here on the Delmarva Peninsula. On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Peninsula egional was the first to offer patients these surgical options. All bariatric procedures are performed in the Medical Center's operating rooms by surgical specialists Mike Sofronski, MD and Daniel, McCullough, MD of the Delmarva Bariatric and Fitness Center in Salisbury, Maryland. Peninsula Regional and the Delmarva Bariatric and Fitness Center have been jointly recognized as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
To earn a Center of Excellence designation, both Peninsula Regional and the Delmarva Bariatric and Fitness Center underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program's surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.
The designation also now makes the gastric bypass and lap band procedures available to Medicare-eligible patients on the Delmarva Peninsula-who meet the program and surgical qualifications and guidelines-who previously faced 100% out of pocket expenses for the weight reduction procedures.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center is also proud to be a CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery.
